Three Mistakes When Marketing Fiction Books

101 15
There are a lot of articles, websites, blogs and more that will try to teach authors how to promote a book.  But the problem with many of these is that they focus on non-fiction books.  But marketing fiction is a completely different endeavor that non-fiction, and there are some mistakes to avoid when marketing your book.

Assuming That Marketing A Book Is Easy

Marketingany book is not easy, but marketing fiction books is especially difficult.  There are thousands of books being published (both traditionally and by indie authors) every single day.  But non-fiction books have an audience because those books are usually trying solve a problem (for example, a book about how to grow huge pumpkins has an audience of gardeners and pumpkin growers).  With fiction, there is much more subjectivity, and it is more difficult to
find and target your audience.  But you have to do this.  Even authors that have been successful with mainstream publishing have usually had to do a great deal of their own marketing.  Do not make the mistake of publishing your book, and then forgetting about marketing it.  You have to do this work yourself.

Assuming Your Audience Will Be There

Marketing fiction has a unique problem, and that is you do not have a built-in audience.  It is the task of the author to find the market for their books.  Make sure you join social media websites and promote your books there.  Twitter is a great place to market, and so is Facebook, but authors need to understand how to market fiction books. You do not want to scream "buy my book".  Learn to build your audience first  by writing great fiction, but also by promoting
others, and they will promote you.

Assuming You Understand Marketing

Many writers, but indie writers in particular, do not understand that marketing is a skill they have to acquire - it is not something you just have.  Indie writers need to recognize the power of Twitter and Facebook in particular.  Every author should use Facebook in marketing because there is such a huge audience there.  If you do not know how to use Facebook, or how to create a Facebook fan page, you are hurting your marketing endeavors.  Take the time (or hire
someone) to create a great fan page so you can increase your following, and thus, your sales.
