How to Calculate an EZ Tax Return
- 1). Download a copy of Form 1040EZ from the Internal Revenue Service website (see Resources for direct link) or pick up a copy of the form at a post office.
- 2). Enter your personal information such as name, address and social security number in the top section of the form.
- 3). Enter income from a W-2 on Line 1. Enter taxable interest earned on Line 2. Enter any unemployment compensation received during the tax year on Line 3.
- 4). Add the amounts in Line 1, 2 and 3 together and enter the total of those lines in Line 4.
- 5). Check the boxes for the exemptions claimed on Line 5. If you are married and filing jointly, check both boxes. If your parents or someone else is claiming you on their return, do not check either box.
- 6). Enter the appropriate amount of deduction on Line 5. If you are claiming yourself and/or a spouse, the amount is provided on Line 5. If someone else is claiming you on their return, check the back of the form for the appropriate amount to enter on Line 5.
- 7). Subtract Line 5 from Line 4 and enter that total on Line 6.
- 8). Enter income tax withheld from your pay (per your Form W2 and Form 1099) on Line 7. If you qualify for the Making Work Pay credit, enter that amount on Line 8. There is a worksheet on the back of the form to check for qualification. Enter any Earned Income Credit due on Line 9a, and Nontaxable Combat Pay election on Line 9b. Add the amounts on line 7, 8 and 9 together and enter the total on Line 10.
- 9). Use the tax tables provided with the form to locate the amount of tax due based on Line 6 of the 1040EZ. Enter that amount on Line 11. Subtract Line10 from Line 11. If the amount is negative, enter it in Line 12a. That is your refund. If the amount is positive, enter it in Line 13. That is the amount you owe. If you wish to receive your refund by direct deposit, enter your bank account information in Line 12.
