Attending Airline Attendant School Is A FAA Requirement
Prior to take off attendants will receive instructions on evacuation procedures, weather conditions, the length of the flight, any health issues related to passengers, and any other relevant information which the Captain of the airplane deems necessary for the attendants to know.
Once aboard he or she will check on first-aid kits, that the cabin is in order, emergency equipment is safely on board.
Once these checks are completed they will then greet passengers as they board the airplane.
Direct them to their seats, show them where they can store their hand baggage, and instruct them on fastening their seat belts.
Once all passengers are seated and secure the airline attendant will then proceed to explain the use of electronic devices, how to use the oxygen masks, and other related material as laid down by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Most of this data is pre-recorded on a CD, and the attendant only has to do the visual to show passengers what they need to know.
Many of the airlines operate on a twenty-four house cycle 7 days a week.
Therefore for attendants to be available for these hours attendants will do rotations of nights, days, splits, holidays, and weekends.
This will depend on their union, the major union is a merger between the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) and Communications Workers of America (CWA).
An Airline attendant must be flexible in their work schedule, and also be willing to relocate if necessary.
The union determines the work schedule, which consists of 14 hours per day for local flights and international flights work to a different schedule.
FAA mandates that all flight attendants get at least 9 hours rest after completion of a tour of duty.
Airlines will guarantee that a number of hours work are available for flight attendants.
The minimum educational requirement for a Flight Attendant is a high school diploma but anyone who have completed a college degree, or has specialty field such as communications, nursing, tourism and travel, hospitality, psychology, and education, these applicants will be given preference to a new applicant who does not have any of these skills.
If you want to be assigned to an international airline you will need to be able to speak at least one foreign language fluently.
To receive certification from FAA, an airline attendant will need to complete certain ancillary training, and complete them successfully.
Ancillary requirement include firefighting, security procedures, medical emergency and aircraft evacuation.
Once completed Airline training school, the applicant will then have to undergo a further three to six week training on familiarization of company policies, they will be trained in the different types of aircraft, relationships between the employee, the company, and AFA-CWA union.
