Morton"s Neuroma and Foot Pain

Many of you might be asking what Morton's neuroma is and what it has to do with foot pain.
Morton's neuroma is when the nerve in the base of your foot swells or becomes thicker.
In most people the nerve is found in the base of your foot in between the third and forth toes near to the ball of your foot.
People between the ages of 40-50 are more susceptible to this condition.
Symptoms You may feel pain or numbness in the ball of your foot and have a tingling in the toes, if not treated the pain can become unbearable and can even cause permanent nerve damage.
The symptoms tend to start gradually and increase over time.
If you have any of these symptoms it is advisable to see your local doctor or podiatrist who will be able to advise you on your condition.
Causes The most obvious causes are tight narrow shoes, wearing high heels for long periods of time (which causes excessive pressure on the metatarsal causing pain) wearing shoes that don't provide enough support, these can irritate the nerves in your feet.
It can also be cause by running and even walking as the repetitive impact of your foot meeting the ground can cause's neuroma.
If you suffer from hammer toes or bunions you are more likely to suffer from this condition.
Treating Neuroma The first port of call should be foot wear, buy a pair of shoes that fit your feet correctly and provide enough support, ensure the sole will absorb shock.
A good quality supportive insole will help as this will support your foot and will reduce the motion that causes neuroma.
Good gel padding in your shoes can also really help.
Injection therapy may be use and in some cases has proved to be very successful.
Some people have had to have a MRI scan so the doctor is able to see the offending neuroma and in extreme cases, when a person suffering from this kind of injury standing is extremely painful and surgery is the only answer.
Finally You should always visit your local doctor or podiatrist who will be able to accurately diagnose your symptoms and tailor remedies to suit.
They may suggest something as simple as purchasing a pair of supportive good fitting shoes.
Remember if this type of injury is diagnosed early no permanent damage will be done.
