The Best Surround Sound Films

    "2001: A Space Odyssey"

    • Stanley Kubrick's space opera masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey" was shot in a wide-screen format called Panavision that has made for a very unsatisfying translation to the standard TV screen. An extra-large TV helps carry through the wonder and awe of space flight and surround sound makes it seem as though H.A.L., the psycho computer, is in the seat next to you. PC World Magazine lists "2001: A Space Odyssey" as one of the best movies to experience with surround sound on Blu-ray.

"Star Wars: Episode IV--A New Hope"

    • The original "Star Wars" film changed the way movies used audio by recording every sound effect especially for the movie. The 1977 original can be found in many lists of best movies to enjoy with a surround sound home theater set. "Star Wars" was the first movie to take full advantage of Dolby Noise Reduction, helping the science fiction epic pull you into a galaxy far away.

    "Ben-Hur"

    • The single most exciting movie sequence that comes to life via surround sound theater equipment may well be the celebrated chariot race in "Ben-Hur." Even if you don't want to sit through the rest of the movie's three hours, you should set aside a half hour of your time to hear what being in the middle of a chariot race is really like.

    "Amadeus"

    • The music of Mozart is a vital element of this film, but so is the hyena-like laughter of Amadeus and the pained whispers and lies of his musical rival, Salieri. A surround sound system places you right in the concert hall, next to Mozart on his piano bench and at the feet of the dying Salieri.
