Care for Flowering Fuchsia Plant
- 1). Ensure that the fuchsia plant remains in a bright location with indirect sunlight. They prefer shaded areas and they will not grow well in direct sunlight due to the heat.
- 2). Water the plants to keep the soil moist during the growing season. Do not allow the soil to dry out, and do not over water the soil so that it remains soggy.
- 3). Add an all-purpose liquid fertilizer to the plant every two weeks. They need to be fed only during the growing season; stop feeding them two to three weeks before the fall frost is expected.
- 4). Trim off dying flowers and berries that form on the plants during the growing season. Removing these will encourage new growth, and the fuchsia will continue to grow blossoms.
- 5). Bring fuchsia plants indoors before the threat of the first fall frost. Dig the plants up out of the ground carefully to ensure that you get as much of the roots as possible. Place them in a well-drained potting soil in a container large enough for the plants, and only water sparingly to keep the soil from drying out completely.
- 6). Cut the branches on the plant to 6 inches once the first frost occurs. Discard any leaves off the stems to help prepare the plant for the winter.
- 7). Store the fuchsia in a shed or garage during the winter months. Wrap the plant in newspaper or bubble wrap. Give it a little water each month to keep the soil from drying out completely.
- 8). Place the fuchsia outside after the threat of frost passes. Gradually give it more sunlight, and re-pot it if it appears crowded.
