How to Debunk an ADHD Diagnosis
- 1). Watch what goes on in and out of the classroom. If you notice that your child is acting out in class, watch what happens when he goes out to recess, to the library or another class. If the acting-out behaviors stop once he leaves the classroom, maybe the child cannot concentrate on the particular style of teaching or on the subject matter. Often the teacher assigns boring and repetitive tasks.
- 2). Assess if your child is going through or has gone through a recent trauma. Often, the child will be distracted if something is troubling her to the point where she cannot focus on anything else. Trauma could be friend-related or possibly trouble at home with one or both parents.
- 3). Notice if your child has a particular talent. Picasso's teachers worried about him because all he wanted to do was paint. If your child has a talent with no outlet, that could be causing ADHD behavior.
- 4). Be honest when assessing your own parenting style. According to the Academy for the Study of the Psychoanalytic Arts, ADHD is significantly associated with unmet needs for childhood nurturance and difficulties in the family. If your child lives in a negative, dysfunctional environment where the mother is distant perhaps and the father is hypercritical or if there is drug or alcohol abuse in the home, that may be the reason for the acting out.
- 5). Analyze the school your child attends. Many public schools are stifling places, where the emphasis is in teaching for the standardized tests. A one-size-fits-all approach to teaching is often the norm in public schools. Your child may flourish in another type of school environment.
