Over Pronation and Over Supination Shoe Wear

103 9
Does wearing the shoes excessively on the outside indicate that you are suffering from over supination or over pronation? It is important to define what over pronation is.
Normal pronation, or "turning inward" of the foot is necessary as the foot adapts to the ground.
With excessive pronation/over pronation, the arch flattens, collapses, and soft tissues stretch.
This causes the joint surfaces to function at unnatural angles to each other.
When this happens, joints that should be stable become very loose and flexible.
At first, excessive pronation may cause fatigue.
As the problem gets worse, strain on the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the foot and lower leg can cause permanent problems and deformities.
Symptoms can manifest in many different ways.
The associated conditions depend on the individual lifestyle of each patient.
Here is a list of some of the conditions associated with Excessive Pronation Such as Hallux Abducto Valgus (bunions), Hallux Rigidus (stiff 1st toe), Arch Pain, Heel Pain (plantar Facsitus), Metatarsalgia (ball of the foot pain), Ankle Sprains, Shin Splints, Achilles Tendonitis, Osteochondrosis, Knee Pain, Corns and Calluses, Flat Feet and Hammer Toes.
During a normal walking or gait cycle a person would strike the ground with the outside of the heel first.
This is part of the normal walking motion and occurs regardless of over pronation or over supination.
A lot of people notice that their shoes wear out faster on the outside part of the heel.
This makes them think that they are suffering from over supination as they feel that their feet roll outwards excessively.
This type of self diagnosis can be detrimental when it comes to choosing Orthotics.
It is completely normal for our feet to land on the outside edge of our heel first (heel strike).
After hitting the ground, and as part of our normal walking motion, the feet roll inwards.
In many cases, the more a person lands on the outside of their feet, the more their feet will roll inwards! This can result in anextremely unstable walking motion as the subtaler joint in the ankle becomes hyper mobile.
In summary, contrary to popular belief wearing your shoes out on the outside indicates lateral instability at the sublater joint during walking, and it is often accompanied by over-pronation.
Orthotics such as the Dr Foot Pro Insoles (other brands are available) helps stabilize your feet's biomechanical balance.
They reduce sideways movement during walking, therefore directing more energy towards forward movement.
