DIY: Sharpening Hedge Trimmers

    • 1). Move the hedge trimmer engine ignition switch to the "Off" position. Lift off the rubber boot on the spark plug's end to prevent any accidents while sharpening.

    • 2). Set the hedge trimmer onto a flat, well-lit area so you can see clearly the cutting teeth while sharpening. Place the engine onto the work area so that the cutting attachment extends outward and you can sharpen the teeth without hitting the table or bench.

    • 3). Brace the engine with your free hand. Wear leather gloves when sharpening. Locate the first tooth at the hilt of the cutting attachment. Set the tip of the file onto the first tooth. Push the file slowly and evenly across the tooth, filing towards the cutting edge.

    • 4). Lift the file up, as you can't sharpen on the backstroke, and push the file across the tooth again. File until the cutting tooth is smooth, while trying to remove as little metal from the tooth as possible. Repeat the same process for each tooth up to the tip of the cutting attachment.

    • 5). Wipe off each tooth with the rag. Remove all of the grinding dust from the teeth. Lubricate each tooth with grease or other lubrication as directed in your hedge trimmer's operator's manual.
