How to Weed Grass
- 1). Pull the weeds out by hand. This works if you don't have many weeds in the lawn or if you just like being out in the grass. Weeds can be pulled more easily from moist ground. Pour water in the ground where the weed is growing. Grasp the weed as close to the ground as you can and pull.
- 2). Mow your lawn regularly to prevent weeds from growing. This will keep the sun from reaching the weeds and it will also help your grass to grow better so it can choke out the weeds. Mow at a higher mowing setting for better results.
- 3). Fertilize to help control weeds. Stimulate the grass with the fertilizer just prior to its growing season. This will help your grass to grow thick and lush, choking out the weeds that want to grow. Choose a fertilizer with a high percentage of controlled-release nitrogen, such as sulfur-coated urea, ureaform or IBDU for a slow, steady nutrient supply.
- 4). Aerate your lawn. Weeds like crabgrass, chickweed and plantain are an indication that your soil is highly compacted. By loosening the soil with an aerating attachment, you can prevent those weeds from growing.
- 5). Spray an herbicide on the weeds. Make sure that you read the label and find the one that is safe to put on your lawn. Most herbicides can be applied by using a hose end or they come premixed with water and you simply spray the weed. Herbicides are simple to use, but do so with extreme caution.
