For gardens full of flowers that bloom during the spring and summer, your once colorful landscape may appear drained and a little lifeless when autumn approaches. While trees may offer some renewed life with fiery hued foliage, fall-blooming blossoms promise lasting color variety in cooler months, often until frost. Add extra interest with diversity in size and shape. - Japanese anemones (Japanese Anemone) are the best fall-blooming perennials, according to the University of Illinois Extension. Its high rank is earned due to its abundance of flowers and tall height that reaches 2 to 4 feet. Blooming from August or September until frost, this perennial flower displays blossoms in shades of white, pink or red. Japanese anemones thrive in moist, well-drained soil and require partial sun to shade.
- Toad lilies (Tricyrtis) make colorful additions to the autumn garden and are also well-suited to landscapes with partially shaded conditions and moist soil, according to the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension. This perennial flower blooms in speckled purple, red or pink colors on slightly arched to upright stems. Blooming from September until frost, small flowers measuring approximately 1 inch in diameter form clusters of orchid-like blossoms with the whole plant taking on a clumping habit. Toad lilies reach a height of up to 3 feet.
- Goldenrod (Solidago species) is a perennial flower well-suited as an autumn garden flower that adds warm color to your space. With a bloom time of September to October, saturated yellow/gold flowers blossom in clusters. Thriving in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with good fertility, goldenrod prefers full sun with a minimum requirement of six hours of daily exposure. Taking on either a spreading or clumping habit, goldenrod grows to a height of 24 to 36 inches tall.
