Lifespan of Dog Crates
- If a dog crate is too small for the dog, it will be subject to more wear and tear, causing the need for an early replacement. A dog should be able to comfortably stand, turn around and lie down in his crate.
- Metal crates generally last longer than those made of hard plastic. Hard plastic can erode when exposed to urine, saliva and the general wear and tear of claws, paws and teeth.
- Does the dog panic when put into the crate? Dogs who are subject to crate anxiety may tear apart their crates and weaken or destroy them long before they would fall apart on their own.
- A crate kept in the back of a car can easily get damaged, leading to an earlier demise. Securing the crate during travel can greatly reduce this risk.
- The proper placement of a crate can be crucial. Metal crates left outdoors may rust over time, and plastic crates placed next to a heater may melt. Take care when choosing the spot for your dog's crate.
