You really don't want to be chomping on pain killers each time you have a headache so here are a few natural ways to combat the dreaded tension headache.
Ok, so first of all let's look at the some of the causes of tension headaches. These days with the increase in stress in our lives tension headaches have become more frequent and widespread. Technically, tension headache is caused due to contraction of muscles especially in the head and the neck portion, and is characterized by a dull and steadily increasing pressure.
Here are a few methods that may work for you:
Soak your feet in hot water to get relief from your tension headache. This method works by drawing blood to your feet, the hot-water will help in easing pressure on the blood vessels in the head. The Pressure on the blood vessels following a contraction of the muscles in the head and neck is the main reason for tension headache.
If you are unable to soak your feet in hot water you could also try a hot compress on your forehead or on your neck. Since the contraction of muscles causes headache, the hot compress can help in relaxing the contracted muscles and provide you with instant relief.
However, you may even like to try the same idea using the opposite technique. You can wrap a couple of ice cubes, and apply it as a cold compress on your forehead. Cold constricts the blood vessels, and, whey they shrink, they stop exerting pressure on the nerves and may also give you relief.
You can also try this method. Put your hand in iced water and open and close your fist for as long as you can comfortably stand it. This simple technique can help in getting relief, as the cold dilates blood vessels and relieves the pressure on the nerves.
Also, don't forget to try the point on your hand called LI4 in acupuncture. Its Large intestine 4 and is famous for removing headaches by stimulating it with your opposite thumb.
Also, back when I was in Australia I worked in the health centre of a private girl's college and whenever a student would come in with a headache we would put tiger balm on her temple and if she still had the headache after 30 minutes we would ask her to come back and give her a painkiller. We had a huge success rate with the tiger balm and very few students would return still suffering from their headaches. Before this technique was implemented, every student would have been given a paracetamol regardless.
You may want to experiment with which method works best for you. Its way better than destroying your stomach with pharmaceuticals.
