    • 1). Plant your red bird of paradise in full sun and well-drained soil. You may grow this plant in partial shade, but it will not flower as abundantly and will become leggy. Allow at least 5 feet of space around each plant to accommodate spread.

    • 2). Water your red bird of paradise once a week during the hot, dry months. Do not allow the soil to dry out completely or get waterlogged. The tree will grow more vigorously if well-watered.

    • 3). Fertilize the tree only if it is growing slowly or is planted in poor soil.

    • 4). Prune the tree once a year during fall to encourage fresh growth during the next spring. Remove up to 24 inches from each branch. Alternatively, cut your red bird of paradise down to the ground during the late winter to encourage fresh, bushy growth the next year.

    • 5). Propagate this species from seed collected from ripe, brown pods. Soak the seeds in hot water or scarify their outer coating with a file to speed up germination. You may also propagate seedlings from cuttings or grow trees from spontaneously germinated seedlings that emerge at the base of a mature tree.
