How to Garden Strawberry Planters
- 1). Take a piece of 1 ½ or 2 inch diameter PVC pipe that is about the height of your strawberry pot. Place the pipe in a vice to secure it and drill quarter-inch holes straight through the pipe and out the other side. Do this every two inches all the way down the pipe.
- 2). Place some pottery shards or cheese cloth at the bottom of your pot to cover the drainage hole. This will prevent gravel and soil from escaping.
- 3). Add a ½ inch layer of gravel for drainage. Fill your pot up to the first hole with compost or potting soil.
- 4). Remove your first plant seedling from it's starter pot. Place it inside the pot on it's side, sliding the foliage through the hole. Add more soil around it, from the inside of the pot and into the hole to secure it.
- 5). Place your pipe into the strawberry planter slightly off-center. Add more growing medium until you reach the next hole.
- 6). Remove another seedling and place it into the planter, with the foliage sticking out through the hole. Continue doing this, filling in more growing medium around the root balls and the pipe, as you work your way up.
- 7). Plant some seedlings in the top of your planter as well once it is filled with soil. The pipe should be sticking out a few inches above the soil line. Mulch around the pipe and the plant to help retain moisture.
- 8). Care for strawberry pot plants by pouring water down the pipe. This will ensure they all get equal water. Continue watering until the soil around the holes becomes damp. Fertilize your plants as recommended with a water-soluble fertilizer. Pour it down the pipe as well to feed your plants.
- 9). Harvest strawberries or herbs as needed or prune flowers by snipping away dead blossoms and foliage.
