    • 1). Plant Marine Lemoine heliotrope where the plant is exposed to bright morning sunlight. During the afternoon, heliotrope benefits from light shade, especially in hot climates. The best soil for heliotrope is rich and well drained. Spade 2 to 4 inches of manure or compost into the top 8 inches of poor soil. In containers, plant heliotrope in soilless potting mix.

    • 2). Water the heliotrope regularly, as the plant is not drought-tolerant. Keep the soil moist, allowing the soil to dry slightly between each watering. Never let the soil get bone dry. Heliotrope planted in containers often needs water every day during the summer.

    • 3). Fertilize the heliotrope at planting time, using a balanced granular fertilizer applied according to label directions. Repeat every three to four weeks throughout spring and summer. For containerized heliotrope, use a balanced liquid or water-soluble fertilizer mixed according to label specifications. Always water immediately after fertilizing, as adding fertilizer to dry soil may burn the roots.

    • 4). Prune heliotrope to within 6 inches of the ground every spring. Hard cutting back results in a healthier, bushier plant with more blooms.

    • 5). Bring potted heliotrope indoors in climates below zone 9, before nighttime temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, as heliotrope does not tolerate cold weather. Place the plant in a sunny window and water only enough to keep the soil moist, as plants require less water during winter dormancy. Don't fertilizer during fall and winter.
