Yoga works powerfully, and its effects last, because it brings change gently and gradually.
Yoga is not meant to be an overnight cure.
As Carl Jung once said: "Things seldom happen overnight except in dreams.
" Changes in the body that do happen too quickly, usually "snap" back quickly, too.
As with whiplash, certain exercises will need to be practiced to help relieve tension.
Many people with back problems are experiencing the result of years of poor posture or body mechanics, or as in Lorraine's case, years of pain and tension induced by a specific physical injury.
In any case, their tensions and imbalances have become deep set.
Poor posture can force back muscles into constant contraction to compensate for imbalances.
This makes the muscles prone to spasm.
Similarly, injuries can induce "protective" contractions that lead to spasms.
To expect immediate transformation from such maladies would be unrealistic.
Yoga may offer solutions for depression, anxiety, epilepsy and whiplash.
Reports from the World Health Organization and elsewhere estimate that mental illness comprises fifteen percent of the global disease burden.
Depression and anxiety disorders contribute heavily to these numbers.
One treatment approach is offered by various medications designed to stimulate the brain's primary inhibitory neuro transmitter, gamma-amino butyric (or GABA) levels.
Findings released by Boston University School of Medicine report that yoga may elevate these GABA levels in the brain and may provide a way to treat these disorders as well as whiplash.
Hatha Yoga is the most commonly practiced and consists of a blend of body postures, gentle stretching, breathing exercises and meditation and relaxation techniques.
With whiplash, these balance and modulate opposing energy forces in the body-leading toward improved health, well-being and inner peace.
Hatha Yoga is a Yoga system that emphasizes the physical along with the path of self-actualization, combining body control and breath-control to achieve inner balance.
There is much can do for whiplash with care taken.
Many of the Yoga postures have been adapted and simplified for the Western body, which most likely did not grow up steeped in the practice.
For example, in the West, people are brought up to sit on chairs, whereas in India people are accustomed to sitting cross-legged or squatting.
In Indian culture, children are introduced to Yoga at a very young age, giving them a head start in their levels of flexibility.
In the West, therefore, it takes years of dedicated practice to achieve some of the complex postures, thus necessitating progressive levels in the teaching of Yoga.
