What Does HUD Mean?
- The FHA started in 1934; the U.S. Housing Act of 1937 started the U.S. Department for Housing and Urban Development. The HUD Act of 1965 made HUD a cabinet-level government agency. Robert C. Weaver was appointed as the first secretary for HUD on Jan. 18, 1965.
- The FHA provides mortgage insurance for home loans given by approved lenders in the U.S. and its territories. Since 1934, the FHA has insured more than 34 million homes. As of 2010, the FHA currently insures 4.8 million family mortgages.
