Commercial elevators installed in new and existing multi-storied buildings are used for transporting persons, luggage, groceries and goods from one floor to another. The lifting capacities of these elevators range from 1,000 lbs to 6,000 lbs. Commercial elevators are ideal for commercial buildings with three or more floors, shopping malls, multiplexes, healthcare centers, and small scale industries.

Commercial elevators are available in several loading configurations to suit a wide variety of construction and budgetary requirements. Commercial elevators are of two types - hydraulic or electrical types. Hydraulic elevators can move up to 8 floors and have a speed up to 200 ft/min whereas those that work with electric power have a speed of 500 ft/min.

Commercial elevators are equipped with all the safety features including hoistway, door interlocks, emergency light, automatic fan ON / OFF, overload indicator, slack chain, cable safety devices, phone, and voice announcing system. The alarm buttons provided in these elevators can be used for seeking the help of outsiders whenever the elevator is in trouble or when it gets trapped. These are also triggered when the elevators are stopped for a long time.

Commercial elevators also have switches that are provided to control the ventilation fan and light inside the elevator. Some elevators are provided with intercom facility so that the passengers can use it in the case of emergency. Open/close buttons are used for opening and closing the doors of the elevator. In short, the controls used in the elevators are user-friendly and the passengers can use them even in the absence of an operator.
