How to Build a Kid's Desk
- 1). Cut a 26-inch piece off one end of the door, making two pieces that are 26 inches x 30 inches and 54 inches x 30 inches, and sand the cut edges. The 26-inch piece will be one supporting side of the desk, and the 54-inch piece will be the desk top.
- 2). Line up the 30-inch sides of these two pieces to make a 90-degree L-shape, with the large piece sitting on top of the edge of the small piece and the corners flush. Clamp or have someone hold them together as you drill two holes through the surface of the 54-inch desk top into the top edge of the 26-inch supporting piece. These holes should go right into the center of the supporting piece, about 3 inches from each long edge of the desk top.
- 3). Paint the supporting piece one color that goes with your child's room; paint the desk top another similar or opposite color. For instance, one piece might be blue and the other green or one piece blue and the other orange.
- 4). Screw the two pieces together with wood screws, from the top of the desk top into the supporting piece, through the holes that you drilled.
- 5). Countersink the tops of the screws by continuing to tighten them until they're just below the surface, and then fill the holes with wood putty and wipe the surface smooth with the putty knife. When dry, sand and touch up with the same color paint.
- 6). Remove the drawers from the filing cabinet, which will be the support at the other end of the desk, and lay the desk top across the filing cabinet so the edge of the desk top is flush with the outer side of the filing cabinet. Drill two holes from the inside of the cabinet up through the bottom of the desk top, without piercing the top side. Secure with two wood screws.
- 7). Replace the drawers in the filing cabinet. You now have a simple and attractive desk with a 54-inch x 30-inch work area, two drawers down one side and a wooden support at the other side.
