How to Plant an Oil Palm Tree
- 1). Remove all stumps, roots and weeds from an of a few feet around the place where you want to plant the oil palm seedling.
- 2). Till the soil in your planting bed down to a depth of at least 1 foot.
- 3). Dig a hole big enough to enclose the root ball of the palm seedling with room to spare. The hole should also be deep enough that the tops of the roots will be completely covered when planted.
- 4). Place the seedling in the hole and cover with dirt.
- 5). Sprinkle 1/2 lb. of a potash fertilizer in a ring around the palm, and water deeply.
- 6). Water every day for a few minutes with a hose, watering less when it rains. If the leaves start to brown, you will need to water more.
- 7). Apply approximately 1/2 lb. nitrogen fertilizer in total during the first year after planting, spread over a few applications, and apply 1 lb. per year after that. The palm should start to bear fruit after three or four years.
