Buying designer jewellery this Valentine's is a sure fire way to impress your loved one.

With the credit crunch a fading memory of 2010, a growing number of people are willing to splash out on designer jewellery on February 14th in a bid to win the affections of their girlfriend or boyfriend.

Robert Gregory, global research director at Planet Retail, told Professional Jeweller that Valentine's is the perfect excuse to loosen the purse strings and spend big on the all important designer jewellery present for your special someone.

Mr Gregory went onto say that more and more people have been reducing their spending on everyday items and necessities so that they can afford designer jewellery in time for the most romantic day of the year.

He told the website: "For Valentine's Day, it doesn't do a lot of favours for someone to scrimp on the presents so buyers are willing to spend more,

"We have seen a lot people cut back on going for lunch during work as they save up for more important parts of the year such as Christmas and Valentine's Day in order to splash out."

Growing consumer confidence is being matched by high expectations from retailers who are predicting a bumper spend from loved-up shoppers especially as the economy is showing serious signs of recovery from last year's recession.

Mr Gregory also said that people are more likely to invest in something they believe in as economic uncertainty has little impact on emotional presents for those starting out in a new relationship or people who have been married for years.

Many designer jewellery retailers are producing exclusive designer jewellery lines for Valentine's Day so it is important that people shop around in a bid to bag that bargain buy which could allow them to purchase extra presents.

Meanwhile, there was more evidence of the growing influence of royal bride Kate Middleton on the designer jewellery spending habits of the British public as Debenhams has announced booming sales of doppelganger engagement ring.

The department store revealed that their cut-price version of Wills' and Kate's engagement ring has been flying off the shelves as ordinary people attempt to copy the regal style.

Carie Barkhuizen, Debenhams PR manager, said: "Even though it's a slightly different colour, this regal ring is sure to have a long and successful purple reign."

The growing popularity of Kate Middleton may encourage more people to buy designer jewellery which is similar to the trinkets and charms that the bride-to-be wears.
