Decluttering Your Bedroom: Organizing More Than Just Clothes

103 4
Since you spend more time in your bedroom than any other room in your house, it's a logical place to start your decluttering efforts.
The first step toward bedroom organization is making the bed.
Yep, Mom had a good idea when she told us to always make the bed every morning when we get up.
If you don't usually make it first thing in the morning, try it! You'll be amazed how much more manageable everything else seems when the bed is neatly made.
The next step is deciding what you want to accomplish in the room.
Sleeping Space You might think it's obvious--after all, it is a bedroom, and bedrooms are for sleeping.
Okay, what do you need to sleep? The first thing most of us need is an alarm clock.
Then you might consider a box of tissues, a back-scratcher, maybe even a pen and paper so you can jot down those thoughts that come to you in the middle of the night.
If you jot them down on paper, you won't have to let them run around in your head all night, interfering with your sleep.
I need a safe spot for my glasses overnight; if they're not in their assigned spot, I can't see to look for them.
It's important to consider where you want to put these things you need.
Maybe there's room on your headboard.
Or maybe you need a bedside table to hold all your supplies.
I even hung an old purse over the corner of the headboard and put my glasses in there.
Wardrobe Storage/Dressing Area You probably keep your clothes in the bedroom, and it's probably most convenient to dress there.
Do you need a mirror so you can check out how you look? Would a laundry hamper make things more convenient so you can put your clothes in it as soon as you undress? Relaxation Retreat Maybe you want to create a pleasant retreat in your bedroom.
I don't recommend creating an office area in the bedroom, or a space for paying bills.
Those aren't restful pastimes.
If you get involved with such activities, you'll probably find it hard to switch gears and sleep peacefully.
But many people enjoy reading in bed or in a private corner of the room.
Make sure you have a place to store whatever book you're reading.
Other people like to watch TV in their bedroom.
An armoire can hold the TV but let you hide it when you wish.
It also provides storage for wardrobe items or DVDs.
Or maybe you can use open shelves to hold your books or television.
Remember to consider what lighting would enhance your relaxation retreat.
Make sure the table lamp is sufficiently bright that you can read comfortably.
Maybe you could use a gooseneck lamp--set on a table, standing on the floor, or hung from the wall--to direct the light right on your reading material.
By making sure you have assigned spaces for everything that you want to do in the bedroom, you'll prevent clutter from accumulating.
When your bedroom is organized, you'll have a well-justified feeling of accomplishment.
You'll be able to sleep well, and you'll have a room in which you can relax.
Once you see how great you feel when your bedroom is decluttered, you'll have a real incentive to organize the rest of your house, one room at a time.
