Foods That Affect the Brain
- Food can have a similar effect on the brain as some pharmaceuticals. Drugs can create side effects such as irritability, pain and foggy thinking. Food, exercise and sleep influence our brain's health in the same way depending on how much we get or lack.
- For a healthy brain, you need omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon, flax meal and nuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which improve learning and memory. Fish oil supplements are excellent for the brain, if you cannot get fresh fish.
Foods with high antioxidants--blueberries, green tea, apples and spinach--also contribute to protecting the brain from damage by free radicals. Foods containing B vitamins support good brain activity. These vitamin B-rich foods are meat, brown rice and soy products. - Heavy, regular alcohol use creates neurological problems. These problems seem to disappear after long periods of abstaining from alcohol. Processed foods and trans fats disturb the balance of the brain and, at times, can create brain fog.
- The ingredient that gives curry and turmeric their yellow color assists the immune system in protecting the brain against Alzheimer's disease.
- Drink at least eight to 10 glasses of water a day. The brain needs hydration to function as it is made up primarily of water. Dehydration can cause memory loss.
