What Does a Refinished Bathtub Really Look Like?

Sometimes I get questions about bathtub refinishing, where the reader wants to know if the refinished tub really looks any good...or not.

Too often, bathtub refinishing websites show the most beautiful tubs in the world. As you might expect, these images do not necessarily reflect real-world refinished tubs.

It's hard to vouch for the skills of every bathtub refinisher in the world, but I can show what one refinished bathtub looks like.

Or at least, as best as I can in photos.

The overarching question is, "How will the tub look ten years from now?" Even a DIY tub refinisher can make a tub look fine for awhile.

The refinished bathtub shown here is approximately 50 years old and was refinished within the last year. Extensive tilework was done around the tub, as well.

Difficult to see, but important. This is the finish of the refinished bathtub. Refinishing will rejuvenate nearly any kind of ugly, nasty tub finish. Tub refinishers are also skilled at dealing with gouges, scratches, holes, and even modest amounts of rust.

This is where the refinished bathtub meets the floor and wall. This is the way a non-refinished bathtub would look, because caulking covers up the edge of the refinishing compound.

Similar to the previous view. Because refinishing basically means painting the tub, you would have a paint edge. But caulking covers up the paint edge here.

The drain, overflow, and other elements that touch the tub surface will be removed by the tub refinisher prior to finishing.
The rust streak running down from the overflow is part of normal tub wear and has nothing to do with the quality of the tub finishing.
