People sometimes get the wrong idea looking at cerebral palsy baby pictures.
This condition can affect the facial muscles in a way that makes the child look confused or makes them drool.
Because of this, they can look mentally handicapped even when they aren't.
When cerebral palsy pictures are taken of older children, this is even more the case.
In young infants, you might not pick up on such symptoms.
Young babies drool a good deal of the time normally.
In cerebral palsy, the brain is unable to properly control the body.
In many cases, the disorder is caused by birth injury, although it sometimes happens later.
Palsy symptoms will normally appear within the child's first few years of age.
The symptoms will not usually get worse as they get older.
Cerebral palsy as four varieties including spastic, athetoid/dyskinetic, ataxic and, finally, mixed.
The mixed variety is a combination of two or more of the other types.
Symptoms will be dependent on the variety of cerebral palsy.
Stiff or difficult movement will result from spastic cerebral palsy.
A loss of balance and depth perception is present in ataxic.
Involuntary or uncontrolled movements are the symptoms of athetoid/dyskinetic.
The spastic variety can be divided further into three different types.
Spastic diplegia will manifest in leg and hip muscles that are tight.
The legs then cross at the knees which makes it difficult to walk.
Spastic hemiplegia will affect only one side of the person's body and this will be stiff.
Proper development of arms and legs can be affected on that side.
Also, in some cases, the upper limb will be affected more than the leg.
The severest type is spastic quadriplegia.
In this case, the whole body is affected and there is likely to be mental handicapping also.
It will be hard to walk and talk and the child may have seizures.
It can take time before you realize that the child is experiencing problems in development.
Babies develop at different rates and the range of what is normal is quite broad.
It can also be hard to tell because of the varying severity of symptoms.
If only mild symptoms are present, it is much harder to determine that you should be concerned.
Among the many symptoms that may be present are weak muscles, difficult in sitting up, difficulty in moving from one position to another, difficulty with motor skills, shaking, uncontrollable movements of torso or limbs, losing control of tongue, difficulty sucking and drooling.
Children displaying one or more of these should be taken to a specialist for accurate assessment.
You cannot know the whole story just from cerebral palsy baby pictures.
If a child is suspected of having the disorder, it will require professional help to diagnose.
Although it may appear there is a mental handicap, many people who have it, have intelligence that is above average.
