How to Decide on a Godmother
- 1). Make a list of all the women in your life who you want to consider to be the godmother of your child. This should include women you feel close to, get along with and trust, such as immediate family, close relatives and significant friends in your life. Potential godmothers need to be an age where they will be responsible and available for a child, from the time the child is born and for at least another 18 years if the godmother needs to take over as a guardian. Women on your list should be at least 18 years old and in good health. Write all the names in a list down the left hand side of a piece of paper.
- 2). Create a column to the right of the list of women's names on the paper. Title the column "Pros," and then make one more column to the right of that called "Cons."
- 3). Write a few traits next to each woman. In the "Pros" column, write a few reasons why you think she would make a good godmother, such as "positive role model," "close proximity" and "trustworthy." In the "Cons" column, write a few reason why each woman may not be the right choice to be the godmother of your child, such as "very busy," "moves locations a lot," "broke my trust." If you choose to baptize your child, the godmother you choose should be at the baptism and should also be baptized, since her role within religion is meant to promote personal and religious growth in a child. If you are not religious, a godmother can be used as a role model and guardian for your child.
- 4). Look over the lists and tally the pros vs. cons for each woman if you desire to look at tangible numbers to compare. Make a decision with the woman that feels like the best fit to be your child's godmother by your instinct, as well as the amount of pros that you have written on your paper. You should choose a women whom you admire and respect, with the hope that your child will also admire and respect her. Discuss your decision with the woman you have chosen and make sure that she is comfortable being a mentor and caregiver to your child.
