How to Fix Moth Holes in Quilts

    • 1). Wash the quilt before you begin repairing the moth holes. It is possible that the moths that have been feasting on your quilt have laid eggs inside of it. Washing the quilt will remove the eggs that might be inside the holes in the quilt. If you sew the moth holes before washing you may sew the moth eggs inside. When the eggs hatch they may eat their way out of the quilt, resulting in further moth damage.

    • 2). Patch the hole using a piece of cloth from the quilt itself. To patch the hole, find a inconspicuous place on the quilt where you can remove a piece of cloth large enough to patch the hole. Use the piece of fabric to patch the hole, the patchwork will be noticeable on close inspection but the hole will be closed and the quilt will be usable again.

    • 3). Cover the hole with an embellishment like a small patch you can buy at your local craft store. You could also use a complementary piece of fabric to cover the hole.

    • 4). Take the quilt to a professional if you do not feel comfortable repairing the quilt yourself. Professional fabric restoration can be a costly option but professionals can use complex weaving techniques that can make the hole nearly invisible unless you are looking for the imperfection in the cloth.
