How Often Should You Water Succulents?
- There are over 5,000 different types of succulent plants found all over the world. Succulents don't require weekly waterings like most houseplants, but all species, even cacti, do require water.
- Succulents experience an active period for about four months out of the entire year, when they grow the most and require the most water. This active period usually spans from the end of the spring throughout most of the summer, when they can be given weekly waterings, but succulents will only require monthly waterings in the winter.
- During the cooler months, one way to determine whether a succulent plant can be watered is by touching the soil. If the soil is completely dry all the way through, the succulent plant can be watered. If the soil is slightly moist, it should be allowed to dry out completely before watering again.
- Even though they are desert plants, succulents need a very thorough watering when they are watered. If there is a tray underneath the plant to catch excess water, the succulent should be given enough water to fill this tray.
