How to Refinish Brass Handrails
- 1). Wear protective rubber gloves. Scrub the brass handrail with acetone, using steel wool. Stop when the handrail appears slightly dull.
- 2). Wash the brass handrail with a water-based degreasing cleanser and a sponge. Rinse the handrail with damp rags. Allow the brass to dry for three hours.
- 3). Apply painter's tape to the handrail's support balusters and other surfaces that will remain unpainted. Cover all surfaces under the handrails with drop cloths.
- 4). Coat the brass handrail railing with galvanized metal etching primer, using a two-inch natural-bristled paintbrush. Brush in a horizontal motion. Smooth drips if necessary. Allow the brass to dry for three hours.
- 5). Wash the metal etching primer from your natural-bristled brush, using mineral spirits.
- 6). Paint the brass handrail just as you primed it. Use a lasting oil-based enamel. Allow the brass to dry for three hours.
