How to Use Paint to Make a Room Seem Larger

    • 1). Emphasize the room's focal point, such as a large window or fireplace. The trick is to paint this area or wall in a rich color that attracts the eye, such as a rich burgundy or brown. Then, paint the other walls a lighter, less expressive color. The eye will be drawn toward the focal point, and it will appear that the room is larger.

    • 2). Do not paint the ceiling a color that attracts the eye. It will make the ceiling seem lower, thus making the room appear smaller. It is best to stick with neutral tones such as white, cream or beige.

    • 3). Use the same idea of painting as in Step 1, but apply the intense paint tones on opposite walls. If you alternate painting the walls in a room, the eye is automatically drawn to the two walls that are painted, which results in the two neutral walls creating more "space" to the eye. Paint two opposite walls a tone such as deep copper, burgundy, green, blue or indigo. You can paint the other two walls a neutral color, such as cream or beige, or you can paint them in the same color family as the other two walls but much lighter (such as navy blue to light blue or seafoam to dark green).

    • 4). Use a reflective, shiny overcoat over the paint in a room to make a sheen on the walls. It will reflect natural light and provide a warmness to any paint shade on the walls. Or you can purchase the paint with a reflective quality so you do not have to splurge on a separate overcoat. Paint shades with glitter, metallic or sparkly tones also create this effect.

    • 5). Create large horizontal or vertical stripes on the walls in a room. Using masking tape, measure out wide stripes across each wall, alternative in color or just one colored stripe alternating with white walls. It will make the eye follow the stripes, and the room will appear much larger, as the eye won't be able to find where the walls end. It is a creative touch to a room, with the payoff of looking larger.
