    • 1). Check the amount of sugar called for in the recipe. If the recipe is for a cold dessert, such as gelatin, you can replace all of the sugar with an equal amount of apple sauce. However, in baking recipes such as bread, some sugar is required to help tenderize and brown food. In this case, replace only half of the sugar amount with apple sauce.

    • 2). Reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe according to the amount of apple sauce used. Apple sauce contains a high amount of moisture and makes the recipe unbalanced otherwise. Reduce the amount of liquid by 1/4 cup for each cup of apple sauce used.

    • 3). Mix the apple sauce in with the moist ingredients instead of the dry ingredients. The purpose of mixing moist and dry ingredients separate is to make sure everything combines evenly. Although sugar is mixed in with the dry ingredients, apple sauce belongs with the wet ingredients.

    • 4). Prepare the recipe as normal and observe the outcome. Each recipe is different and you might have to make a few trial-and-error batches until you get it right. If the recipe is too watery, decrease the amount of liquid. If it is too dry, increase the amount of apple sauce. Any adjustments you make should be small; no more than an 1/8 of a cup increase or decrease at a time.
