    • 1). Apply a 4-inch layer of compost around the base of the magnolia every fall. Compost provides magnolias with nutrients. Compost also acts as a mulch, helping to protect the magnolia roots from extreme cold during zone 4's long winters.

    • 2). Leave fallen leaves around the magnolia. The leaves rot, providing extra nutrition for the plants as well as an extra layer of mulch to help protect its roots.

    • 3). Dig in a handful of bone meal around the magnolia's root zone every fall. Bone meal contains phosphorus that helps magnolias form flower buds.
