Yeast Infection Causes and Symptoms
A yeast infection is a common type of infection, caused by an overgrowth of Yeast organisms.
Candidiasis is an infection that is caused by a group of microscopic fungi or yeast, these fungi live on all the surfaces of our bodies, and under certain conditions they can become so numerous they cause infections, especially in warm and moist areas, such as the vagina, underarms, thighs, mouth, under the breasts or any folds of skin.
In order for the infection to occur, certain conditions have to be met in order to break our body's natural defense barriers.
Not all these conditions need to be met, but you do need some type of skin damage, with not enough defense from your body to fight off the infection.
o First of all, you must damage your skin some how, as this is your first line of defense, you can easily do this from a scratch, friction, moisture, or heat.
This means you can get it from two skin surfaces rubbing together when they're wet and hot, such as in the groin or under the breasts, this can easily occur when you go swimming for an extended time with out thoroughly drying yourself.
o Your second line of defense is your immune system, which means you are more susceptible to infection when your immune system is down, such as when you take alcohol and drugs, or if you have certain diseases such as cancer or HIV.
o Your third line of defense is your helper bacteria, these bacteria can be found on your skin as well as inside your body, and your immune system uses them to fight off the bad bacteria, and make the site of possible infection an inhospitable place for the bad bacteria, by changing the pH level, and releasing hydrogen peroxide.
This means when your helper bacteria are killed off, or lowered, such as when you take antibiotics, you run the risk of infection.
o Another reason for infection can be because of ill health, by which I mean if you are not healthy and fit, the oxygen levels in your blood are lowered.
This can occur from smoking, or not getting enough exercise.
This can also go hand in hand with your immune system, by being affected by certain diseases or viruses.
o Another cause which cannot be helped, is pregnancy.
The changes in hormone levels can affect the vagina, by changing the environment and Yeast levels.
If any of these conditions are met you probably have a yeast infection, a yeast infection can show up as a rash or thrush, you should consult your doctor to confirm that you do not have a more serious problem.
