How Do I Start Fruit Trees?

    • 1). Clean all fruit matter from fruit seeds, and allow them to dry. Store the seeds in a loosely sealed container, such as a glass jar, in a cool place until mid-January.

    • 2). Soak the seeds in a bowl of water for 24 hours or until they swell. If the seeds have hard shells, such as walnuts and cherries, scratch the seed surface with sandpaper prior to soaking.

    • 3). Embed the seeds in three times their volume of damp peat moss.

    • 4). Place the seeds and peat moss in a sealed glass jar in the refrigerator for at least 60 days.

    • 5). Plant the seeds in the ground after the last frost of the winter. Plant at a depth of about one to two times the length of the seed, and cover with soil.

    • 6). Cover the planting area with a thin layer of sand.

    • 7). Place hardware cloth over the seed area, and bury the edges into the soil. Keep the planting area moist, and await germination. Germination rates vary widely from two weeks for soft seeds to 12 weeks for hard-shelled seeds.
