    • 1). Use shampoos and conditioners specially made for thick hair such as smoothing conditioners. These products contain silicones that help smooth and lay down the cuticle of the hair.

    • 2). Apply a moisturizing leave-in product to your hair. The moisture within the hair shaft will help allow the hair to take shape from the heat of a heating tool. This will allow the hair to straighten without overusing the tool on the same section of hair to get it straight.

    • 3). Apply a straightening serum to wet hair before blow-drying. The serum will help make it easy to straighten the hair and eliminate frizz by preventing moisture from entering the cuticle.

    • 4). Section your hair, so you have a 3-inch width and a 3-inch thickness of hair to work with. Clip the rest of the hair out of the way. Position the hair dryer down towards the hair and dry the section of hair while using a paddle brush to brush the hair straight as it dries.

    • 5). Divide another section of hair and blow-dry. Continue sectioning and drying until all of the hair is dry.

    • 6). Divide your hair into sections that are no thicker than 1 inch and no wider than 1 inch. The flat iron won't straighten the hair effectively if too much hair passes through it at one time. Clip the rest of the hair out of the way.

    • 7). Position the flat iron as close to the roots as possible without touching the scalp. Hold the ends of the hair with one hand and gently pull the hair downward. Run the flat iron slowly down the length of the hair. Continue with another section.
