The Growing Success of Hair Transplants

Losing hair is a traumatic experience for both men and women, and at one time there was little that could be done to rectify the loss apart from purchasing an often poorly manufactured hair piece.
Thankfully, times and technologies have changed and there are now a number of treatments that can be employed with an extremely high rate of success.
We take a look at one of the latest hair transplant procedures being used to treat pattern baldness in both male and female patients.
Patten baldness is the name for normal hair loss that occurs due to passed on genes and ageing.
This type of hair loss can be more accentuated during stressful times, or if an individual is eating an unbalanced and unhealthy diet.
The loss is graded according to the Norwood Scale in men, or the Ludwig scale in women.
This is because the formation of balding areas varies between men and women.
Men are more likely to lose hair from the crown and the temples, whereas women experience a general thinning on top.
Modern hair transplants take hairs from a donor area at the back of the scalp and transplant them in the area that is undergoing balding.
The procedure works because the transplant uses fully functioning follicles to replace ones that have changed the type of hair growth from terminal or intermediate hairs to vellus hairs.
Many people are under the impression that going bald means that there are no hairs present at all, whereas in actual fact, there are hairs, but they are very thin, short and contain no pigment.
These are known as vellus hairs and are a result of the follicle shrinking, which can be caused by many factors such as bad diet, smoking and hormone imbalance.
This process only happens in certain areas, and as such, if the donor follicles are from an area that is least likely to undergo this change from terminal to vellus hairs, the hair will continue to grow as normal once transplanted.
The needs of each patient can vary wildly, and there are different procedures put in place to treat male and female patients.
As such, it is seriously recommended that a professional and fully qualified hair transplant professional is consulted before a patient decides on any type of treatment.
The consultant will tell you why you are experiencing hair loss and recommend the best solutions available to treat the hair loss condition.
