Have you brought your child to a pediatrician because of ADHD? Were you prescribed with a number of medicines not to treat but to control the symptoms of ADHD? Now, I am not saying that you should not believe the doctor, let us be clear on that. However, you must not be dependent on these medicines because there are actually issues about it.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a disorder wherein the people diagnosed with it show persistent and frequent pattern of developmentally inappropriate inattention and impulsivity, with or without hyperactivity. To treat this, doctors usually recommend medications. These are not only to control the symptoms but also to prevent the possible co-morbidities of the disorder. These may include learning difficulties, depression, anxiety disorders and/or disruptive behavior disorders. However, there currently are issues regarding the medications.

Here are the 7 reasons why you should treat ADHD without using drugs:

1. There are times that medications cannot help the alleviate condition.
2. The child's physical examination and medical history must reveal no medical contraindication for treatment first. If so, these medications are fatal to the life of the child.
3. Patient should be at least 6 years old. There may be irreversible side effects when these medications are taken by patients younger than 6 years of age.
4. Administration of medication must be supervised by an adult
5. The stimulant drugs prescribed are classified as drugs of abuse
6. Even if the person himself is not abusing the drugs, there is still a possibility that a relative living with the person does.
7. School personnel must be willing to supervise medication administration if a pill is taken midday

So, if you are willing to take these risks, then feel free to do so but with extra caution is you may consider. And if you will take medications, make sure that you will not depend your life or of your child's on it. You may take some medicine and pair it with non-drug treatments that are proven to be effective. There are a number of these non-drug treatments like parent training, group social skills training or cognitive behavior training that are equally effective but will take more time and may require a certain amount of patience.

Now that you know these things, you may want to reconsider your treatment options and weigh the benefits and disadvantages of each of your choices. Again, I will remind you that medicines are not always harmful. They are there to alleviate a person's condition, but there will always be a side effect or some sort of risk if a person will take it. There is no harm in trying other treatments that does not involve drugs so think hard and make the right choice.
