Visit your local supermarket or beauty store and peruse the available hair dyes. Read the labels and determine what type of coverage you want for your gray hair, based on your personal needs. Seek out hair dyes that were created specifically to cover gray hair for the best results. - 2

Buy the hair dye kit, if one is available. Otherwise, buy the hair dye of your choice, the developer, a hair dying bottle or bowl and brush, a pair of disposable plastic or latex gloves, and a hairstyling cape, if possible. Use an old towel if you are unable to find or afford a hairstyling cape. - 3

Combine a small amount of the hair dye and developer (a tablespoon or less) in the empty bottle or bowl. Apply the concoction to an inconspicuous patch of skin. Wait 24 hours to ensure no allergic reaction occurs before applying the hair dye to your head. - 4

Check the skin for any irritation after the 24 hour waiting period. If the area looks fine, mix the rest of the hair dye and developer in the bottle or bowl and let the hair dye develop. Pin your hair up into sections if you have medium or long hair while waiting for the dye to develop. - 5

Drape the cape or the towel around your neck. Put on the gloves and begin to apply the developed hair dye to your hair. Apply the hair dye all over your head if you have short hair. Paint on the hair dye with the brush, starting at the roots and working your way down the hair to the tips if you have medium- to long-length hair. Pay special attention to the gray areas, regardless of your hair length. - 6). Remove the gloves and set the timer for the length of time needed to dye your hair. Check the hair dye box for the appropriate time necessary to allow the dye to change your hair color. Avoid sitting or laying on anything that could be stained by your hair dye while the hair dye is developing. Wait for the timer to go off.

Check your hair once the timer goes off to ensure the hair dye has properly covered your gray. Leave the hair color on for a bit longer until you see a change in the gray. Once satisfied, wash your hair thoroughly, making sure all excess hair dye is completely washed away.
