How to Space Hybrid Poplar Trees
- 1). Allow the hybrid poplar trees at least 8 feet of space on all sides if you are planting it as a crop that you plan to harvest in less than 12 years. Dig a hole using a shovel and plant the first poplar tree. Place the end of a tape measure next to the tree and stretch it out to a distance of 8 feet to plant the next poplar tree. When planting another row of poplar trees, space the next row 8 feet away from the first row.
- 2). Plant hybrid poplars at a distance of 6 feet apart if you are planting them in a single row as a windbreak. Follow the same planting technique whereby you plant the first tree and then use a tape measure to mark the location of the next tree 6 feet away.
- 3). Allow more space for hybrid poplars planted in the yard or landscape that will stay in place for many years. In general, if the tree will remain in place for longer than 15 years allow 15 to 20 feet of space on all sides. This means that no other trees, buildings, or other structures should be within this area.
