How to Use a Silca Pump on a Bicycle

    • 1). Unscrew the cap from the valve stem on the tire and set it aside.

    • 2). Identify the type of valve on the tire. A Presta valve is narrow and has a threaded nut at the tip. A Schrader valve is comparatively wide and has no nut at the end. If the tire uses a Schrader valve, skip to Step 4.

    • 3). Unscrew the Schrader air chuck from the Silca pump nozzle. Unscrew the nut from the tip of the tire valve as far as it will go.

    • 4). Fit the Silca pump nozzle onto the tire valve. For Schrader valves, screw the nozzle clockwise to secure it to the valve. For Presta valves, the nozzle merely fits onto the valve.

    • 5). Check the side of the tire for the recommended inflation pressure. Typically this is stamped on the right, or drive side, of the tire close to the valve.

    • 6). Place both feet on either side of the pump base. Silca's classic and mini pumps are strictly hand-held pumps and do not have a base.

    • 7). Grasp the pump handle and pull it away from the base to extend the pump shaft. Then push the pump handle down to force the shaft back into the base, in turn pumping air into the tire.

    • 8). Check the Silca pump pressure gauge where available. Only Silca floor pumps have this feature.

    • 9). Continue to pump air into the tire until the desired tire pressure is achieved. For Silca pumps without pressure gauges, an external gauge will be needed to measure tire pressure. The pump nozzle must be removed and the pressure gauge fit onto the valve.

Remove the Silca pump nozzle from the valve. For tires with Presta valves, screw the nut at the tip back down onto the valve.

Fit the valve cap onto the valve and screw it in place.
