When & How to Prune Holly Bushes?
- 1). Trim your holly bush in winter. This syncs well with the plant's growth cycle and excess trimming can be used for holiday decorations if you're so inclined.
- 2). Cut away branches that are interfering with each other, are broken or appear diseased or dead. Cut the branches with your pruners back several inches within the outer edge of the bush. Take into account the natural shape of the bush as you prune. The holly does not lend itself to topiary-style cutting; strive for a natural shape.
- 3). Pick up the prickly trimmings carefully and dispose of them in the garbage or on a compost pile. Keep some of the trimmings for holiday decorations.
