    Artistic Vision

    • A photographer must have a good eye for capturing details in his surroundings. Photographers must know how to work with lighting, how to find the right camera angles, how to downplay imperfections and how to find the best features of scenes or people. Some of this knowledge may come naturally to a photographer, but many spend years taking photography classes or practicing their skills.

    Knowledge of Equipment

    • Photographers work with several types of equipment. Primarily, a photographer uses a still film or digital camera. The camera often comes with different lenses, memory cards, films and tripods to capture different scenes. Photographers often use lighting equipment and backdrops to stage their photos. Many also work with digital photography software to enhance their captured shots. You must have a good working knowledge of all the equipment required for the job.

    Meet Client Needs

    • Whether a photographer works with a major news publication or takes family portraits, he will have a client. The client will have specific needs and want the photographs to come out a certain way. You must have the ability to communicate well with your clients, listen to their needs and set up your shots so that you get the photo the client wants.

    Tips

    • Many photographers own their own businesses and work as freelance artists for clients. As a freelance photographer, you must also understand the fundamentals of operating a business and handling finances. For example, you must know how to schedule appointments, meet with clients and send out invoices after you complete the requested work.
