What is the Relationship Between Acne Breakouts and Hormones?

In most cases, acne breakouts usually begin at puberty.
At this stage our bodies begin to produce hormones called androgens.
These androgens are responsible for the swelling and the over-production of sebum (oil) by the sebaceous glands in people with acne pimples.
This over-production of oil and a slow exfoliation process causes the hair pores to be blocked, this then leads to acne pimples developing.
The body's sensitivity to these hormones also causes acne pimples to develop in some women during their menstrual cycle, pregnancy or during menopause.
One thing that is certain is that acne is not caused by excess hormone levels, but by an abnormal reaction of the skin to normal levels of these hormones.
But nowadays they are so many people that are developing acne pimples in adulthood; the possible reason for this occurrence would be lifestyle, diet and probably the increase in artificial hormones around us (foods, plastics, medication and water).
While undergoing acne treatment you can regulate your hormones by doing the following:
  • Try avoiding stress - When you are stressed your body tends to over-produce hormones which leads to the sebaceous glands responding by producing too much sebum which cause acne breakouts.
Stress whether it caused by school, college, work, money or relationships usually results in more acne breakouts.
Hormones such as cortisol are produced more by your body when you are stressed.
And this can aggravate your acne breakouts.
Stress also affects the ability to digest properly.
This is because in response to stress your body takes blood away from your stomach to your muscles preparing them for 'flight'.
This is the normal human response to stress and this usually aggravates acne.
Ensure you use an acne treatment that is capable of controlling your body metabolism and striking a balance in your cortisol hormone level.
  • Try using breathing and relaxation techniques.
This helps a lot in reducing stress.
  • Avoid drinks that contain caffeine.
Caffeine stimulates increased hormone production which could lead to more breakouts
  • Always remember to exercise.
Regular exercising balances your hormones and helps reducing stress
  • Eat foods such as linseed (flaxseed), celery, parsley, alfalfa, evening primrose oil, fennel and rhubarb.
These foods are hormone-regulating foods and they help balance your hormonal levels.
  • Drink lots of mineral water
  • Eat organic produce if possible and try avoiding foods stored in plastic packaging.
When choosing an acne treatment, you best option is to go for a system that will balance your hormones as well as fight acne causing bacteria on your skin surface.
This way you are combating acne from both the inside and the outside of your body.
With this system you are sure to completely erase acne from your system.
