How to Make a Mortar Block
- 1). Mix a small amount of thinset mortar into a bucket about one-quarter full of water. Mix with a paddle mixer.
- 2). Keep adding small amounts of thinset mortar to the water, mixing with the paddle mixer. Periodically use a mixing knife to ensure consistency.
- 3). Stop adding thinset mortar once the consistency of peanut butter is reached. Wait five minutes and mix it up again for at least five minutes more.
- 4). Add some of the thinset mortar to a straight-edge trowel.
- 5). Use the straight-edge trowel to spread the thinset mortar across the surface where you are making the mortar block.
- 6). Spread the thinset mortar evenly across the entire surface and smooth it out as much as you can.
- 7). Dip a large sponge into a bucket of water and wipe down the trowel. Then, run the sponge over the mortar block and follow with the trowel. This ensures the block is perfectly even and smooth. Wait for the mortar to dry completely before continuing with your project.
