If you are going through a recent break of your relationship or even a divorce you are no doubt feeling heartbroken over your loss of love and your best friend. You may be crying and sad all the time. You may feel lonely and depressed or angry and hurt. You may also be having a hard time getting over your loss and moving on. You have no doubt talked to friends and relatives about your grief. At first they were probably really supportive. They listened to you cry and told you how the break up is really your ex's loss because you are such a catch. But after a while they started dropping hints and suggesting you needed to move on already. Now they are actively avoiding any more discussions about your ex and your broken heart and they even tell you to get over it already. But what if you just aren't ready to do that. What else can you do to get all those sad feelings out? Well writing may be a good outlet for you.

But wait you are thinking to yourself - you are no writer how can writing help your broken heart? You don't have to be a great writer to use writing to help you heal from your break up. The point isn't to create great works of literature, the point is to get your feelings out and down on paper. Writing them down can really help you let go of negative feelings because it gives them a place to go.

So where do you start? A good place for many people to start is simply journaling or taking some time every day (or as often as you need to) to write down how you are feeling. You can also write down thing you wish you could say to your ex. Journaling is a great place to express you anger or depression (after all depression is really just anger turned inwards).

Another writing exercise that helps many people is writing letters to the person who hurt you or left you. Now you are never going to mail these letters so you can say anything to the person that you want to in these letters. The purpose is to give you an outlet to fully express yourself. Again you are never going to mail these letters so feel free to vent and say anything you need to. After finishing writing the letters many people like to ceremonially let go of all the negative emotions by throwing them away or burning them or otherwise getting rid of them. Just as you let go of the letters you are letting go of all the negative feelings so you can move on.

One last option if you are feeling particularly creative is to try writing poetry. No it is not hokey. People have been using poetry for centuries to heal from heartache. It can rhyme or not. It could be a sonnet or a limerick. The point is to express yourself and let your feelings pour out onto the paper so you can work through them and move.

So if you are hurting after a break up give writing a try. You might be surprised at how it helps you let go of bad feelings so you can move on with your life.
