Solutions for a Blue Screen
- The blue screen, or "blue screen of death," occurs when a major failure occurs at the operating system or hardware level on your computer. Occasionally, simply rebooting your computer solves this problem and you never see it again. More often though, an ongoing issue causes a blue screen. Use multiple troubleshooting methods to analyze and resolve a blue screen.
- Uninstall and reinstall any recently installed hardware if you cannot find a solution based on the message, as this may be the source of the problem. You can contact the manufacturer of the hardware for assistance
- Force quit (hard reboot by pressing the power button) and restart in safe mode once you have eliminated new hardware as the potential problem. To start in safe mode, press "F8" while the computer is starting. Run a virus scan and remove any viruses.
- Restart your computer in safe mode (press "F8" while restarting) if you find viruses are not the problem. Back up your computer to the most recent Restore Point prior to when any new software is installed. A Restore Point images, or copies your computer's state automatically every 24 hours and also after new applications are installed.
