- 1). Measure the length of each side of the polygon if it is irregular. This means the sides are not all congruent.
- 2). Write the length of each side down so that you'll be able to remember it. If you're able to, label the polygon with the side lengths so that you know which lengths correspond to which side. Labeling each side lets you see where you got your numbers from, so it's easier to check for mistakes.
- 3). Add the lengths of all the sides together to find the perimeter of the octagon.
- 4). Measure the length of a single side and multiply the length by eight to calculate the perimeter if it's a regular polygon, meaning that all sides are equal.
