    • 1). Locate the county of the borrow or the land serving as collateral. Go to the United States Postal Service's home page (http://www.usps.com) and click the "Find a ZIP Code" link immediately below the home page banner. Type the address in the form spaces and hit "Submit." Click on the link "Mailing Industry Information" and a separate page will appear with the county for the address.

      Find the website for the county's register of deeds office to search for mortgages. Enter the name of the county, state and register or recorder of deeds to find the website. Alternatively, use the link from the website for the National Association of Counties. Select the desired county on the map. On the association's page for the county, click the link with "[county, state]." Go to the link for register or recorder of deeds. If the county does not offer online access, go to the office.

    • 3). Enter the last name of the borrower and at least two letters of the first name in the grantor search box. Select "deeds of trust" if the website or office allows you to limit your search. Otherwise, look for "deeds of trust" or "d/t" next to the grantor name.
