Definition: A prolonged abnormal dilation of the pupil, generally caused by either drugs, disease or trauma. A normal pupil will dilate in a dark environment to let in more light and constrict in brighter light to prevent damage to the retina. A mydriatic pupil remains large, regardless of light levels.
